Frequently asked questions about tennis and padel shoes

  • There are several factors to consider when choosing your tennis shoes, but the most important ones are the amount of time you will use them and the surface on which you will play. A very common mistake is to invest little in shoes when you will be using them for at least 3 matches per week, which already constitutes intensive use and clearly demands better materials, technologies, and outsoles. If you invest more than necessary at first, it’s not a problem — the lifespan of your shoes will be longer.

In the case of tennis (and padel) shoes, it is recommended to leave about half a centimeter of space from the toes to the shoe’s toe box. The reason is that being a sport involving sliding not only laterally but also forward, you’ll damage your toenails if the shoes are too tight, because throughout the match or training session your toes will be hitting the front interior. TIP TO GET IT RIGHT… When trying on the shoe, push your foot forward as much as possible, and then with the foot fully flat on the ground you should be able to slide your index finger behind the heel.

We recommend checking the size guides you find in our product pages and verifying measurements in centimeters or JPN size. It’s very important that your foot doesn’t slide inside the shoe; also, you’ll notice that a shoe that leaves free space at the toe box fits your foot perfectly—manufacturers are not foolish.

Some claim there are no differences because women have been involved in the sport for many years and tend to have wider feet, but despite that, the shoe lasts remain different. Evidently, a women’s size 41 is not the same as a men’s 41. Women’s models are designed taking into account the specific characteristics of female players — both the shape of the foot and their physique. Women usually weigh less than men and, although they may be just as aggressive in their game and movements, their shoes endure less stress. We recommend that each gender wear footwear designed specifically for them.

As for women’s and junior shoes, there are also differences, but in this case, they are compatible. For example, a junior player with a high level of play but still a child’s foot can (and should) invest a bit more and move up to high-end junior models or women’s models built for adults. This way, the footwear will better support their health and improve their game.

  • Cushioning: refers to the shoe’s capacity to absorb impacts, reduce strain on joints (knees, hips), and provide comfort during movement. The “midsole” materials are designed to dissipate impact energy and return part of it as propulsion.
  • Stability: is the control of lateral or rotational foot movement, keeping it firm during changes of direction, preventing unwanted twists, and maintaining a secure base. It includes lateral reinforcements, a rigid chassis, denser zones, or structures that limit excessive foot displacement.

In summary: cushioning protects against vertical impact; stability controls lateral foot movement.

The goal is to find a balance: footwear with good cushioning but without compromising the stability necessary for your movements.

Choosing the right tennis and padel shoes is essential for moving safely, protecting your feet and maintaining comfort throughout the match. Although both sports involve quick footwork and frequent changes of direction, each one requires a different balance of grip, stability, cushioning and freedom of movement. At Ipontennis you can compare technical footwear for men, women and juniors and go straight to the section that best suits the way you play.

Tennis and padel shoes: technical footwear for every movement

Regular sports shoes are not designed to withstand repeated lateral braking, forceful loading or rapid turns on court. Sport-specific footwear includes reinforcement in high-wear areas, structures that secure the midfoot and outsoles engineered to provide traction without restricting movement. The aim is not only to improve performance: the right shoe can also reduce internal foot movement, rubbing and loss of stability.

Start by choosing your sport

Tennis shoes

Tennis shoes must respond to lateral movement, acceleration, braking and the different loading patterns created at the baseline and around the net. Our range includes lightweight options for players who value speed, more structured shoes for maximum stability and balanced models for versatile use.

You can also browse men's tennis shoes, women's tennis shoes and junior tennis shoes. These sections make it easier to find the right lasts, sizes and designs without mixing different catalogues.

Padel shoes

Padel shoes are designed for short movements, frequent turns, quick approaches to the net and rapid changes of direction in a smaller playing area. Grip and lateral stability are especially important, while the outsole should still allow small adjustments and controlled sliding when the court requires it.

Match the outsole to the court surface

The outsole affects grip, sliding and durability. On clay courts, a specific pattern normally helps release loose clay and control sliding. Browse our selection of clay-court tennis shoes to find models designed for this surface.

All Court shoes are intended for more versatile use and can perform on different surfaces within the limits stated by each manufacturer. Not every outsole works equally well on every court, so it is important to check where you usually play before choosing.

Stability, cushioning or lightness: find the right balance

  • Stability: useful for players with powerful loading patterns, aggressive changes of direction or a preference for a secure feel.
  • Cushioning: helps absorb impact and can improve comfort during frequent training or long matches.
  • Lightness: creates a faster, more flexible feel for players who prioritise agility.
  • Durability: important if you play many hours or wear down the toe and side areas quickly.
  • Breathability: helps keep the foot comfortable, although it must be balanced with the level of support and protection required.

There is no single perfect shoe for every player. A fast mover may prefer a lightweight design, while a player with demanding footwork may feel safer in a reinforced model. The best choice depends on the sport, the surface, how often you play and your personal preferences.

How to choose the right size and fit

The heel should feel secure and the midfoot stable without painful pressure points. Leave a small amount of room at the front so the toes do not hit the toe box during sudden stops. A shoe that is too large allows the foot to slide, while a shoe that is too tight may cause discomfort, blisters or damaged toenails.

Widths also vary between brands and product families. In addition to checking your usual size, consider whether your foot is narrow, standard or wide and read the specific fit information for each model.

Shop by brand and compare technologies

Each manufacturer develops its own solutions for stability, cushioning, energy return and wear resistance. Explore our tennis shoe brands and padel shoe brands to compare models from Asics, Adidas, Babolat, Head, Joma, K-Swiss, Lacoste, Mizuno, New Balance, Wilson and other specialist companies.
